Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford was first fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford was then able to apply to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
